The upcoming June 2 -7, 2017 MLH Conference and Workshops will have a different feel to it this year.  Instead of Cook Hall, just across the street, we will be staying in Voorhees Hall, which was constructed in 1907.  Voorhees Hall is named after Elizabeth Rodman Voorhees, who along with her husband, Ralph financially enabled Hope College to build this beautiful historic dormitory for women.

In 1905, only twenty women from the Holland area attended Hope College, which housed only men.  Women had attended the college since 1878, but because a woman’s housing facility was not available, there were only a small number of female students.  At that time, the then third President of Hope College, Gerrit Kollen approached Elizabeth Voorhees, who had a history of funding women’s education, and petitioned her financial help to build a dormitory for women.  With $35,000.00 of Elizabeth’s Donation, Voorhees Hall was built.  It transformed the Hope campus.  Only thirteen women lived there the first year, but it was filled to capacity by the 1920s.

The Dutch architectural Voorhees Hall, built of red-orange Veneklaasen bricks, manufactured in nearby Zeeland, Michigan will be our home during the 2017 MLH Conference. Come explore a bit of history as you take one of our many seminars and workshops offered this year
